Dometic ProHeat M-Series 24V Motor

The Dometic ProHeat 200404K is the factory 24-volt drive motor used in compatible standard ProHeat M-Series diesel-fired coolant heaters.

Unlike a conventional fan motor, the M-Series motor performs several mechanical functions. ProHeat’s service documentation specifies that the motor drives:

• The combustion-air blower
• The air compressor
• The fuel supply pump

This makes the motor a central component of the M-Series combustion system.

How the M-Series Motor Works

The ProHeat M-Series uses a shared motor to power several parts of the burner system.

Combustion-Air Blower

The motor directly drives the impeller-style blower. This blower supplies the primary combustion air that enters the combustion chamber.

Air Compressor

On current diaphragm-compressor M-Series heaters, the motor drives the air compressor through a gear set.

The compressor supplies a metered amount of compressed air to the fuel nozzle. As compressed air passes through the nozzle, it creates the venturi effect used to draw fuel into the nozzle and atomize it into a fine fuel-and-air mixture for combustion.

Fuel Supply Pump

The motor also directly drives the positive-displacement fuel pump. The pump draws fuel from the vehicle tank and supplies pressurized fuel to the regulator before the fuel reaches the nozzle.

Because all three functions depend on the same motor, a motor problem can affect combustion airflow, compressor operation, and fuel delivery at the same time.

Compatibility

The current G-II ProHeat M-Series catalog lists the 200404K motor in the common burner-head/blower assembly and identifies it as:

Motor, 24 Volt, c/w fasteners

The current M-Series range includes 24V configurations of:

• M50
• M80
• M90
• M105
• M125

The M50, M80, and M90 are available in both 12V and 24V configurations, while the current catalog lists M105 and M125 basic heaters as 24V.

12V Motor

For applicable 12V M-Series heaters, the corresponding motor is:

200508K – Motor, 12 Volt

Do not substitute the 12V and 24V motors.

Standard M-Series vs. Variable M-Series

The newer Variable M-Series uses a different design. Its current parts catalog identifies:

877580K – PCM and Blower Motor

as the blower-motor/control assembly.

Therefore:

• 200404K: Standard M-Series, 24V
• 877580K: Variable M-Series PCM and blower-motor assembly

Verify the heater family before ordering.

Mounting Fasteners Included

The current factory parts catalog lists 200404K complete with the motor mounting fasteners.

The associated hardware is:

850233K – M6 × 1 × 16 mm stainless socket-head screws, 4/pkg.

The current exploded parts diagram shows these four fasteners securing the motor to the burner-head assembly.

Drive Gear Is Not Included

The motor’s drive gear should not be assumed to be included with 200404K.

The ProHeat motor-replacement procedure instructs technicians to remove the gear and retaining ring from the existing motor and install them on the replacement motor.

For current diaphragm-compressor M-Series heaters, ProHeat separately lists:

Inspect the existing gear components during motor replacement and replace them separately if worn or damaged.

Replaceable Motor Brushes

ProHeat also offers the motor brushes separately:

950669K – Brush Kit, 2/pkg.

This provides a service option when the motor itself remains mechanically serviceable but the brushes require replacement.

Motor Diagnostics

On G-II M-Series heaters, the PCM monitors motor operation.

ProHeat identifies:

Diagnostic Code 12 – Motor

A Motor Code 12 can indicate:

• Short circuit
• Electrical overload
• Open motor circuit
• Motor mechanical binding
• Motor speed above or below its target during operation

Before replacing the motor, ProHeat recommends checking the combustion-air blower for rubbing or obstruction, manually checking the motor for mechanical binding, and inspecting the motor wiring and PCM connection.

The system also includes a separate Motor Speed Sensor Diagnostic Code 17 when the expected motor RPM signal is not detected.

Installation Notes

When replacing the motor:

• Shut down the heater completely
• Disconnect vehicle battery power
• Disconnect the fuel supply line as required by the service procedure
• Remove the blower housing
• Remove the blower from the motor shaft
• Disconnect the motor connector from the PCM
• Remove the four motor mounting screws
• Carefully remove the motor without damaging the fuel-pump seal
• Transfer the drive gear and retaining ring from the old motor when serviceable
• Lubricate the fuel-pump seal with clean diesel fuel during assembly
• Confirm correct motor alignment
• Reinstall the blower and retaining ring
• Reconnect all electrical connections before operating the heater
• Run the heater and verify proper operation

The current service procedure specifies that the motor shaft must align correctly with the fuel-pump gear during installation.

Motor Mounting Torque

ProHeat specifies approximately:

75 ± 7 in-lb (8.5 ± 0.8 Nm)

for the four motor mounting bolts in the G-II service procedure.

OEM Application Note

ProHeat notes that transit-bus and motor-coach M-Series heaters can use OEM-specific parts and software.

For an OEM-specific heater configuration, confirm the existing motor part number or heater serial/application before ordering.
